Authentic Italian at Gastrovino, Chelsea.

There aren't many great Italian restaurants in London. As someone who really loves Italian food, my favourites are Polpo, TrulloToto's, and Rivea (Cicchetti is also decent too). However, after experiencing a really exceptional dinner at Gastrovino last week with my friend Jenn, Gastrovino is now very high on that list of best Italian restaurants in London.

I arrived to find Jenn already sat up at the bar, glass of wine in hand, chattering away to the barman about their favourite Italian wines. She's a bit of an Italian food and drink connoisseur after growing up holidaying all over Italy. After trying out a few wines, we sat down at our table to eat.

The menu is full of incredible looking dishes, so we found it so hard to choose! We got a good selection and ended up feeling very full and very happy...

Ham and pastry canapes...

Avocado and Cornish Crab toast...

 Sausage and scamorza arancini balls...

Beet salad...

The most incredible homemade burrata and tomato...

A beautiful barley salad - the flavour combination of the pomegranate, mushrooms, squash, and barley was just incredible! We couldn't get enough of it and for me it was the standout dish if the night.

A feta and pea salad. Gastrovino make all of their cheeses themselves just down the road, and they import the majority of their vegetables from Italy as they have a far better flavour. British vegetables are just too bland and flavourless!

Seabass carpaccio...

And a really tasty octopus dish...

We were so full that we decided to share dessert, and finished with the chocolate cigar. An excellent dessert with a beautiful rich chocolate filling and light pastry shell.

We had such a lovely dinner at Gastrovino, and we left vowing to recommend it to everyone we know! For exceptional wines and food at a decent price, definitely go and try it. It would make the perfect date spot as the restaurant isn't too big and busy and is super cute and cosy.

Also my lovely friend Jenn has just self-published a book Horrible People, which is now available for kindle on Amazon! Go check it out - I promise you won't be disappointed! It's all about her years in the New York social scene, and trust me, after hearing all her stories over the years you don't want to miss them! It's basically the real life Gossip Girl.

What's your favourite Italian restaurant in London?

  6. I totally agree that there aren't many decent Italian restaurants in London. This one definitely looks worth trying!

  7. Catherine, you've 100% sold me on this place...The arancini sound amazing - never seen scamorza used before! - and the salads all look to die for, especially the one featuring the burrata (sweet Jesus). Going to have to consider sloping west next time I'm in need of an Italian fix :) x
