Adventures at Angkor Wat, Cambodia.

Angkor Wat is one of the most famous wonders of the world. It’s one of the main reasons people visit Cambodia, and while a lot of people skip the capital city, Phnom Penh, and go straight to Angkor, our Cambodian adventure shows how you can do both all in a short space of time! Angkor really was something special though, and I still have to pinch myself that I was actually there standing inside the temple.

We had just five nights in Cambodia, but thanks to great flight times and the cheap internal flights between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, we managed to learn about the history of Cambodia in the capital city, explore the hipster bar scene there, and then fly up to Siem Reap to do both Angkor Wat and the other temples (including the Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones one, Ta Prohm). We saved Angkor Wat for our last full day in Cambodia, and despite a disappointing sunrise, it was one of the highlights of our trip.
It’s hard to choose an absolute highlight or favourite, as how can you possibly choose!? From the amazing Khmer curries, to the stunning hotel pools, to the breathtaking architecture in Phnom Penh, the friendly tuk-tuk drivers, the cute little bars, and the temples that made you feel as though you’re walking through a movie set. Our entire five night trip to Cambodia really took our breaths away and we had the best time ever!
Anyway, onto Angkor Wat…

Sunrise at Angkor Wat

We woke up bright and early at 4am ready for our tuk-tuk driver to pick us up at 5am. One of my favourite memories of Cambodia was the journey, sitting in the tuk-tuk driving along the roads of Siem Reap, the breeze and speed of the tuk-tuk throwing my hair back and keeping us cool before the sun rose and the heat and humidity picked up.
Sunrise was around 6am, and we got there with about 15minutes to find a spot. It was much less busy than I thought it would be, but the crowd was still thick around the middle section (a bit like me, lolz!). As the sky lit up we realised how much cloud there was right in the way of the sun. Sadly this meant no dramatic sunrise for us…but it was still pretty special and definitely worth the early start.

Exploring the temples of Angkor Wat

We decided it wasn’t going to get much better, so wandered off to see the temples before all of the other people from the sunrise crowd left their lake-side spot. As we approached the entrance to Angkor Wat we were just stunned by the beauty of it. It looked so ancient, and I know that sounds super weird…because let’s face it…it IS ancient…but it just looked like something from an adventure story that an explorer would stumble upon.
I don’t know about you but I was pretty obsessed with those stories as a kid, films like Indiana Jones, and super old school films involving jungles, deserts, ruins etc – I loved them! It was a childhood dream come true for me to be able to walk around an ancient temple and explore it…

My dress is from Sportsgirl (an Aussie store) last season, and is a favourite of mine, but there are a few similar options below…

Clare was amazing and kindly took loads of photos for me, and we both had so much fun discussing how people in the past would have used the temple and exploring all the different corridors and areas. We had a couple of hours exploring Angkor Wat, and then found our tuk-tuk driver and headed back to our hotel. We got back just in time for a late breakfast, and then spent the rest of the day napping by the pool and floating around!

My bathing suit is from here, and is probs the most flattering one I have ever found for curvy bodies!

Dinner at Khmer Kitchen

That evening we had a delish dinner at Khmer Kitchen, it was insanely cheap and the food was amazing! Also I loved the Cambodian’s obsession with watermelon juice…soooo good.

And then after a quick visit to a Cambodian supermarket (is it just me who LOVES to go to supermarkets in other countries just to see what they have!?), we took one last tuk-tuk back to our hotel. The perfect end to our perfect time in Cambodia!
