For years I did a lot of sport. When I was younger I used to dance, ice-skate, play football, swim, play tennis, do karate, and sail. The past few years I've done pretty much nothing, which has resulted in weight gain, a decrease in fitness levels, and generally feeling a bit rubbish about my new untoned self. For example, I ran a 10k race a couple of years ago and it took an hour and a half...it should not have taken that long. I've lost 7kg in the past 2 years since that race, which you can see from the photos below, especially on my face/cheeks, but now I desperately need (and want!) to tone up and gain some muscle and definition. So when Special K approached me and asked if I wanted to be part of their new campaign, where they would sponsor me to make the changes and blog about my progress for the next 3 months, it wasn't a very hard decision to make.
As part of the new campaign, they asked me to choose something I've been wanting to do for a while. It could have been anything, whether it was learning a new language, taking up a new hobby, or doing what I chose; to get fit. I've made a pledge to myself, and for the next three months I'll be following it and keeping you all updated with my progress.
"For the next three months, I pledge to tone up and get fit. Although I do a lot of walking (5 miles a day), I don't do anything else, so I'd love to start lifting weights and doing some exercise classes to target my arms, tummy and legs to finally get rid of excess body fat!"
The reason for this new campaign, is that after 30 years of using the same recipe, Kellogg’s have changed it for the better. Originally 2 grains, the new cereal now contains 3, making it whole grain. Moving away from the Drop a Dress Size in 2 Weeks programmes that they’re known for, Special-K wants to champion women, regardless of their size. They want to encourage a community that support one another, to become the very best version of themselves that they can be.
I think it's a fantastic idea to champion women regardless of their size. My own personal pledge isn't about losing weight, as I now love my size and shape, and my childbearing hips are never going to disappear no matter how much weight I lose. I just want to increase my fitness levels and tone up the last bits of extra baggage that are around my hips, tummy and arms, and turn it into muscle. I'd also really like to change my eating habits and stop snacking so much during the week when I'm sitting at my desk at work.
To do this, I'm planning to hit the gym and use weights, as well as attend exercise classes that focus on toning up. Thankfully I used to work at a bodybuilders weight training gym, and a couple of the regulars there have said they'll help me out with the weights side of things. In regards to the not snacking during work, I'm just going to tell my colleagues to shout at me if I snack on bad foods, and remove them from my hands/mouth.
