1920’s Ball at the Royal Automobile Club.

Friday night was the inter-club younger members group 1920’s ball at the Royal Automobile Club, and it was a night of drinking, eating, and lots and lots of dancing! If you’re a newbie to my wee blog and don’t already know, the inter-club younger members group is a group of all of the under 35’s of the traditional old-fashioned private member’s clubs in London’s Mayfair, fondly known to us as ‘clubland’. Once a month each club takes it in turn to hold an event at their club, and this month it was the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall, also known as the RAC.

The RAC always hold the best events, I absolutely love the club and Chris Barsley on the younger members committee always does an incredible job of organizing them! This time we had a champagne reception upstairs, before moving through to the ballroom for dinner and dancing! I had the veggie option for dinner as I don’t like crab or beef (the starter and main on the normal menu), and it really was delicious! The food at the RAC is amazing, I’ve never had a bad meal there.
The dress code was black tie, white tie, or fancy dress. We had a good mix on our table! Obvs I was in fancy dress – I love any chance to get my flapper dresses out 😉

For mains I had a vegetable stack with green beans and potatoes, and for dessert it was Vacherin Mont Blanc, which is basically meringue with hazelnut cream – delish!

After dinner and endless bottles of wine, everyone headed to the dance floor, where a jazz band with members of the original Rat Pack played a mixture of 1920’s music, and more recent swing and jazz numbers.
Although I couldn’t do the Tango to save my life, I’m a bit of an expert at 1920’s dancing what with my years of various dance lessons (although it’s quite a bit harder when you’ve had a few glasses of wine), so I charleston’d and waltzed around the dance floor with various dashing young gentlemen, before finishing the night dancing to Cheek to Cheek with my wonderful friend J – who even managed to ‘dip’ me (when the guy leans you back and it looks really good but feels a little scary and as thought you’re going to fall backwards onto the floor). In fact, here’s a photo of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers doing it, just so you can see what I’m talking about!

Most of the men were in white tie or black tie, but as usual Sid had to be different, so he came as a gangster – he even had a hat, but it disappeared half way through the night.

I really must stop smiling so ‘big’, it makes my top lip disappear – attractive, not.

Thereee we go, a normal smile!
After dancing we all headed downstairs to the Long Bar for more drinks, before people started drifting off and my friends and I all headed to VQ for honeycomb milkshakes and sweet potato fries.
